Parents & Children |

As health care professionals our main concern has always been the well being of
our fellow human beings. As parents our emphasis has been the protection of our
children.
We would like to share with you a brief outline of the potential risks of tap
water and bottle water as well as links to websites that can provide you with
more information.
Our water supplies - municipal and wells - contain many contaminants. They
enter the body in three ways - ingestion, inhalation, and skin
absorption. Some chemical contaminants are carcinogenic; others like bacteria,
viruses, parasites, cysts can potentially make you and your baby very ill.
Provide your family with the safe pure water you need. BWS has carefully
selected equipment designed to remove everything that is not water from your
water. With our products you can be confident that such a basic need as clean,
pure delicious water is at your fingertips.

Drinking & Formula Water
Infants and children are very vulnerable to all forms of contamination:
microorganisms, nitrite/nitrates, lead, aluminum, fluoride, chlorine and many
other chemicals. Using untreated tap water to mix
baby formula, or as a beverage for our families is not a good idea. Thousands of
potential contaminants have been documented in our water supplies, including
pharmaceuticals. Nitrates present a challenge: our area has become known for
nitrates in drinking water in wells. This poses the risk of Blue Baby Syndrome
in infants.
Boiling the water will kill microorganisms but will concentrate chemicals in
the water. So boiling is only a partial answer.
Using bottled water is not the answer. The bottle water industry is not
regulated as well as the municipalities and enforcement is minimal, so there is
no assurance that bottled water is safer to drink than tap water.

Healthy Baths & Showers
In the shower and bath, where the water is hot, you are overexposed to
chemicals that are inhaled and absorbed through the skin. With inhalation
and dermal exposure, virtually 100 percent of the contaminants are absorbed
directly into the bloodstream. In 1991, the EPA concluded that the average
person absorbs more contaminants from bathing and showering than from drinking
polluted water.
Children are even more at risk as they love playing in the bathtub. And the EPA
acknowledged in a June 30, 1998 report, "Children have a greater
surface-area-to-body-weight ratio than adults, which may lead to increased dermal
absorption." Circulatory flow rates are generally higher in children and their tissues,
organs and biological systems are still developing, which may increase a child's
susceptibility to toxic effects. Furthermore, tap water can contain calcium, magnesium,
copper and even iron which can collect on the skin and hair clogging skin pores,
causing flaky, itchy skin. Bacteria can get trapped under this film creating diaper rash
and aggravating conditions such as cradle cap and eczema.

Soft Linens & Clothing
Hard water contains high amounts of calcium, magnesium and possibly iron.
Since it is difficult for soaps and detergents to dissolve in hard water,
they don't lather well or rinse completely out of our clothing or off our bodies.
Residue from the contaminants in water, soaps and detergents cling to the fibers of
clothing and linens making them dingy, rough and scratchy which is irritating to the
delicate skin of babies and children. This worsens diaper rash, cradle cap and eczema.
These conditions can be further aggravated by chlorinated water because chlorine dries
and irritates sensitive skin by promoting the oxidation of common minerals and pollutants
already on the skin.
A Whole House Treatment system removes hard minerals and chlorine from your water eliminating
the causes of the above problems.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy is an exciting time for soon to be parents. Building another human
being places many demands on a woman's body and increases the need for good
water. Drinking a minimum of 10 glasses of good quality water a day is an
absolute must during pregnancy.
Water helps prevent dehydration and its side effects: fatigue, irritability,
lack of concentration, aching muscles, contractions and premature labor,
especially in the third trimester. Since blood volume doubles and thickens
during pregnancy; drinking plenty of water prevents hypertension and
cardiovascular disease. Water flushes out the body and aids in preventing
urinary tract infections, constipation, water retention and hemorrhoids. It
also facilitates the flow of nutrients to the baby. Much of that water is
consumed in the amniotic sack. Amniotic fluid alone needs to replenish itself every
hour by using roughly a cup of water stored in the body. Replacing that
water on a timely basis will insure the unborn baby is protected within the
womb.
Breast milk is the perfect source of nutrition for infants.Water is essential
for breast milk production and increases the need for water consumption to 13
glasses a day. A lactating woman can become easily dehydrated which can lead to
fatigue, decreased breast milk production and the other symptoms listed above.

Swimming
In a pool our bodies take in the chemicals from the water in three different ways:
absorption through our skin, inhalation of the vaporized chemicals and occasionally
swallowing the pool water. Swimming in a chlorinated pool presents health risk particularly
to children because they breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults so they inhale
more chemicals relative to their body weight. Also since their respiratory systems are still
developing they are prone to more potential side effects from pollutants.
Research points out a 5 fold increased risk of asthma and hay fever for children swimming in chlorinated pools.
Aware of the risks of chlorinated pools, Best Water Solutions carefully studied available alternative
technologies and selected the safest and most effective. Our pool systems eliminate the need for chlorine
and other harsh chemicals to maintain a swimming pool and reduces pool maintenance to a bare minimum.
