Pool Treatment
Swimming and playing in the water is enjoyed by many, especially children. Can
you think of anything more refreshing than jumping in a pool on a hot summer
day?
Pools must be properly treated for health, safety and aesthetics. In doing so
conventional pools use chlorine as a disinfectant which when mixed with
naturally occurring organic compounds (like sweat, saliva, body oils, leaves,
grass, etc) forms triahalomethanes (THM). Two of the THM's have been proven to
be carcinogenic. Maintenance of conventional pools also calls for clarifiers,
algaecides, muriatic acid, etc. Basically most people swim in a chemical
cocktail.
When we are in a pool our bodies take in the chemicals in three different ways:
absorption through our skin, inhalation of the vaporized chemicals and
occasionally swallowing the pool water. The amount of chemicals we absorb in
one hour in a chlorinated pool is the equivalent of drinking one week's worth
of chlorinated water.
Swimming in a chlorinated pool presents health risk particularly to children
because they breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults so they
inhale more chemicals relative to their body weight. Also since their
respiratory systems are still developing they are prone to more potential side
effects from pollutants.
Research points out a 5 fold increased risk of asthma and hay fever for
children swimming in chlorinated pools.
There are also negative cosmetic effects from chlorine: burning eyes, dry-itchy
skin, stripping brown hair of its color, turning blonde hair green, damage to
the structure of hair, turning hair "frizzy", etc.
